Why "Ecocert" Matters

Ecocert badge

What this certification actually means, and why we bother checking for it before a product goes live on the site.

What Does "Ecocert" Mean?

Ecocert is an independent certification body, originally French, that audits products and ingredients against organic and environmental standards. When a product carries Ecocert certification, it means an outside organisation has actually gone in and checked the sourcing, processing and environmental claims, rather than the brand just deciding for itself what counts as "natural" or "eco-friendly".

Why We Bother Checking

"Natural" and "eco-friendly" are two of the least regulated words in the entire supplement industry. Pretty much anyone can print them on a label with no real requirement to prove anything behind them. Ecocert exists precisely to close that gap, so seeing this certification tells us a brand actually submitted to external scrutiny rather than just borrowing the vocabulary.

It's also worth flagging that certification bodies audit against specific, published criteria. That means the claim behind an Ecocert badge is verifiable in a way that a vague "eco-conscious brand" statement simply isn't.

You can see Ecocert's own standards and scope directly on their official website, and for the UK's general position on organic and environmental claims in food, the GOV.UK organic labelling guidance is a useful reference point.

How We Actually Check This

We ask for the specific certificate or certification number, and where possible we check it against Ecocert's own records rather than just trusting a logo on packaging. Logos get copied and pasted more often than you'd think. A current, verifiable certificate gets the badge. A brand simply saying "Ecocert approved" with nothing to back it up doesn't.

A Few Questions People Actually Ask

Is Ecocert the same as being organic?

Not necessarily. Ecocert certifies against several different standards, and organic is one of them, but not the only one. A product can hold an Ecocert certification for cosmetics or eco-friendly manufacturing without specifically being certified organic. Worth checking exactly what the certification covers rather than assuming.

Why would a brand bother getting certified if it's not legally required?

Mostly because it costs them time and money to prove something they could otherwise just claim for free. That's genuinely a decent signal in itself, a brand that pays for independent scrutiny it doesn't strictly have to get is usually more confident in what's actually going on behind the scenes.

Does this certification say anything about whether the product works?

No, and that's an important line to draw. Ecocert is about sourcing and environmental standards, not efficacy. A product can be fully certified and still not be the right fit for what you're looking for. We keep those two questions separate in our reviews for exactly this reason.

ℹ️ This page reflects our own research process and isn't medical advice. Certification status can change over time, so we'd always recommend confirming current status directly with the brand or Ecocert if it matters to your decision.
